Death - A Great Leveller

You know I was always and I am still fascinated by Death. Well, it’s not actually fascinating to see someone die and neither do I wish someone to die. But think of it, when Death stares at us, there is nothing in this world that can stop it. In the face of death, everything just disappears, I mean everything. Your money, fame, material items, relationships, dear ones, or close friends. This is why I call it as fascinating. I used to question myself, if assume I am gonna live for another 6 months then will I change my lifestyle, will I remain the same, will I indulge in something which I wanted to do for a long period of time, how will my friends miss me, will the world around me change, will people around me act differently……so many questions.


As Steve Jobs said, “Death is the destination we all share. No one wants to die. Even a person who wants to go to heaven don’t want to die”
In Life we have choices to make, but in case of death we don’t have many choices to make, actually none. But I have seen many people don’t want to talk about death. Like, how talking about sex is still a taboo thing in India, death is also similar to that. It’s a fact that no one can escape death. Yet we don’t want to talk about death. Talking about death doesn’t mean we are endorsing it or wishing someone, but just a matter of acceptance of the fact. No one knows when, where and how we are all gonna die. Whatever we have accomplished throughout our life, just seem of little or no importance in the face of death. No matter how good or bad you were in your life, everything becomes equal. I just thought to myself about it for a minute it felt kind of relieved. I mean no more responsibilities, no power, no one to hurt you, no one to break your heart, no need to satisfy someone, no need to compromise, no expectations, no one can discriminate you….just nothing.


When death stares at us, it’s time to end our journey (good or bad, worthy or not), on this earth and move on to a newer place without knowing how and when we will come back to life, if we do come back. So do what you love, if not, try your best to love what you are doing without any expectations because in front of death everything gets levelled.

  1. Death is and will always be the biggest reason why we should not run after materialistic possessions and start enjoying life - which, incidentally, is a blessing from above!! Great post!!

  4. I have been trying to understand the demise too. It gives a peace of mind, that no matter what and how you feel, it will end one day. And, yes it is indeed taboo, for the people who love you. I can not talk or think of my close ones bidding adieu. A piece of me dies.

  5. kya pata kab, kahan se maregi.. bas, ki main zindagi se darta hoon .....maut ka kya hai, ek baar maregi... - Gulzar .

    more the people start accepting death as reality of our lives , less the misery we will find in this world. As commented above we have all began running behind the materialistic and also sacrificed our families for that. Death is one thing I am no more afraid of, because I know I will have to accept it either today or tomorrow. but when tho are alive live as if it's your last day ..

I do fear death of closed ones,most of the times but I now comfort myself when I think about the oblivion of death (c'mon, there's no heaven, no Hell, no rebirth as something else) I think: what was there BEFORE I WAS BORN? was THAT scary? No. Indeed, uncertainity of life in my mother's womb, of course of which I remember nothing. Was I scared then? Of course not. So I say, don't fear going back to where you were before you were born. You weren't scared then. In many ways, life is more scary than death

    @Chintan: It surely gives a peace of mind. I feel accepting that one day our close ones will not be there, will help us overcome the emotional drain that will follow when they die.

    sometimes i do think of death, i look all around me and wonder, 'one day none of this will exist. not the sky, not the windowpane, not this bed im sleeping on, not even my thoughts. fuck!' it sends shivers down my spine. Only way to overcome that is to think of the next day and the possibilities that will be there. i know thats escaping a hard reality, but i guess thats how i am:P

Because almost everything - all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important."

    I just love his perception towards death.

    Of course, death is not a happy thought to think about or a merry topic to talk about. But it is the only certainty that exists in our lives.

    And certainly Death cannot be considered as just an end, because Death at times is the beginning of a journey which is beyond human imagination and often only the enlightened can experience it.

    1. I also love Steve Jobs's perception towards death and that is what made him touch so many peoples lives with his simplicity in the design of his products. Well I don't know what happens after death and not interested also.

  11. Death, releases us of all responsibilities, hurt, anger, guilt everything..I would love to die...and it is so much more endearing than life!

    But at the same time, I don't wish to die.. for my mother.. She lost her father, husband in a span of months.. I am the reason why she is alive.. How much I wish sometimes, I was dead, to be relived of everything..I want to live for my mother.. That is what makes me happy, and even death cannot bring me any respite, but this feeling!!!

    This post, has actually reflected so many of thoughts from my blog.. and I have beginning to feel, that how much we run after worldly desires, somewhere deep down, we all await our deaths more!!Same thoughts!!! Truly loved it.. and thanks a ton for sharing this on your comment!! Missed it totally.. !!!
