I, the Fortunate One

I, the Fortunate One

I feel life is at its best, when it teaches some very important lessons. We all know everyone’s life has some issues or problems, yet some are well at looking at the bright side of it. I would like to share two recent instances where I realized how lucky I am to be born as a human being first and then with less problems when compared to others.

When I was working in a previous company, I had to pass through this traffic signal to reach my office. It so happened that, almost everyday I had to stop at this particular signal. There was a Muslim guy who earns his living by begging at that traffic signal. The not so good part is that he doesn’t have any legs, so just sits there bearing the heat and the morning traffic challenging his strength to earn his living. You can tell from the expression of people who pass by him that some show sympathy and some others their helplessness.

In my current office, there is a middle-aged person and his job is to ensure that the restroom is kept clean all the time. And recently, he completed 4 years in this job. Just imagine someone completing 4 years just cleaning the bathrooms, well some may say he is just doing his job, but for me that’s something different. This guy is always smiling, speaks very good English and wishes good morning to everyone. Now that’s called looking life in a different perspective and taking it as it comes.

These two instances are among the millions of instances in our everyday life that teaches us, how fortunate are we with our existing lives. After seeing them, I thought to myself how fortunate I am to be able to live every single day not to worry about my next meal or sleep or feeding someone who is dependent on me. These instances just hit you in the face. I felt really small in front of these people. After seeing these people, my problems felt like a drop in an ocean, its nothing. May be there was a reason as to why I had to stop at that particular traffic signal every single day. If there is one thing that I learnt from these instances is to show gratitude towards God for making my life much better when compared to them and be grateful for whatever life has to offer. It’s for us to ensure that we keep moving ahead in spite of all the problems that life throws at us.

I would like to sign off by saying that, “Life’s problems seem big, but looking at it from a different perspective makes it less relevant”
